Miscellaneous skeleton parsing notes

Unlabelled Constituents

The marking of unspecified constituents is widespread. In UCREL corpora they are simply marked with unlabelled brackets.

Examples of the use of unlabelled brackets:

  1. (Compound) Adverbial Phrases:
    The money ran out [ very_RG quickly_RR ]
  2. 'Unequal' coordination:
He did it [[ reluctantly ] and [ with a feeling of 'deja-vu']]
  3. Compound attributive adjective phrases:
    a [ rather_RR splendid_JJ ] cup of tea
  4. Verbless clauses:
There he stood [ with [N his head N] [P under [N his arm N]P]]

Coordination

Any of the above "hyper-tags" may be used with '&' or '+' to indicate coordinates. The first coordinate will have '&'. Subsequent ones will have '+':

  1. [N[N& This performance N&] and [N+ his two previous ones N+]N]

  2. He claimed to have committed the crime [Fa[Fa& because he was desparate Fa&] and [Fa+ because he saw an opportunity to solve his problems at a stroke Fa+]Fa]
